North DuSable Lake Shore Drive Redesign
Sam Schwartz is participating in a comprehensive reimagining of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive, the waterfront highway along Lake Michigan. The corridor serves as a major transit corridor but it also divides the city from its recreational waterfront. The project is exploring roadway redesigns that increase accessibility between the waterfront and the city, while prioritizing bus service and establishing elements of bus rapid transit (BRT). Potential design features include bus-only lanes, tolled managed lanes, and bus priority features for such as queue jumps and signal priority, and other BRT treatments.
Sam Schwartz has helped incorporate public transit reliability considerations and social equity considerations into the evaluation metrics and simulation of alternatives. We also supported design improvements for the Lakefront Trail and coordinated the selection of preferred bus turnaround and staging facilities. Input has been solicited from a comprehensive list of stakeholders and at public meetings along the corridor.
