SSE developed a coordinated transit, traffic, and parking management plan for the opening of the 18,600 seat Prudential Center in downtown Newark, NJ. SSE's overall access plan sought to prevent an overload of available capacity and unnecessary circulation on any facility, particularly the state highway and local street network and parking areas serving an overlapping confluence of event goers, commuters and through traffic. The SSE plan combined a strong emphasis on marketing the use of transit to reduce vehicular demand and diverting traffic from congested roadways and intelligently distributing it throughout the street network. Key to this traffic plan was a reduction of demand on Route 21, the main state artery through downtown Newark and a parking management plan that captured vehicles close to the portal entries from the regional highway network before they cross-circulated in the core area.
SSE also developed plans for vehicular and pedestrian wayfinding signs, highway trailblazer signs, static parking zone signs and variable message signs along these routes to be used during events with a real-time parking and traffic monitoring program.
