Sam Schwartz Engineering (SSE) Hires National Expert in Alternative Transportation
Brian D. Shaw provides a perfect complement to SSE's focus on sustainable solutions
Erich Arcement, Senior Vice President and General Manager of SSE's New York City office, is pleased to announce that Brian D. Shaw has joined SSE. Founded in 1995, SSE is an engineering and planning firm specializing in developing specific transportation solutions for projects all over the world with offices in New York City, Newark, Chicago, Tampa, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Detroit-Windsor.
Shaw is a proven expert who can resolve complex transportation problems, delivering solutions that save money, promote environmental sustainability, and enhance the customer experience. In his last position as Director of Campus Transportation and Parking Services for the University of Chicago, Shaw developed and implemented travel demand management (TDM) programs that reduced parking demand, increased public transit ridership and carpooling, and encouraged biking and walking, all while increasing parking revenue for the University. In his new position, Shaw will be focusing on assisting campuses, large employers, and regional planning commissions in providing sustainable and cost-effective solutions to address their needs.
"As a nationally recognized, award-winning transportation planning leader with a record of making real, fundamental shifts in travel behavior, Brian's abilities are a perfect complement to SSE's history of providing innovative transportation solutions and promoting alternatives to the automobile," said Jeffrey Smithline, Director of Traffic and Transportation for the New York City office. "Brian will be at the forefront of SSE's efforts to develop and implement sustainable solutions for campuses and large employers – be it reducing parking demand, addressing traffic congestion, or identifying opportunities to free up areas of land for other uses. Brian's addition is especially timely as we continue to provide solutions that allow our clients to maintain expansion plans while scaling back on costs during these tough economic times."
Currently serving as President of the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT), Shaw also sits on the Editorial Board for TDM Review and on the faculty for Academic Impressions for their TDM Toolkit. Shaw has given presentations for the Sustainable Universities Symposium, PaperClip Communications, and Progressive Business Conferences on university parking and also presents regularly on university and employer transportation issues and programs. Based in SSE's Chicago office, Shaw will be marketing his abilities throughout North America and beyond.
